The Netherlands Biotechnology Congress
An open and ongoing dialogue between researchers and between researchers and society is essential to stimulate the exchange of ideas and to improve the sustainable production systems. Therefore, the NBV organises this meeting on the 11th and 12th of March, 2010. It highlights different aspects of biotechnology. The congress is organised to meet the interest of the members of the Netherlands Biotechnological Society and those who are interested in biotechnology and its developments. It aims to present and discuss the latest developments and challenges in biotechnology, the place of biotechnology in society, and to create a stimulating environment where science, business and society can meet. The 2-day programme features keynote lectures by experts in their field. The following keynote speakers already have agreed to give a presentation:

The spring meeting of the two Dutch Microbiological Societies (NVMM & NVvM) will be held on April 20 and 21, 2010 in Papendal. The central theme of the plenary Tuesday-morning session is “Microbes: friend or foe”. Within this theme several renowned national and international speakers will highlight examples of situations where microbes are beneficial for people or the environment, but also situations where microbes are extremely harmful. Of course there are examples where either the distinction is not obvious or where there is a balance between these two situations. All this illustrates how we have coexisted with microbes over the course of evolution and how these relationships between host/environment and microbes have led to a complex and intricate coexistence.
After the plenary session the Kiemprijs will be awarded to young investigators. As last year more prices will be awarded, both from NVMM and NVvM, so even You can be awarded. Below, you will find more information on the prizes.
After lunch, we continue in 7 parallel sessions for the remainder of the meeting. Here microbiologists throughout the Netherlands will present their exciting data. As in other years the poster session will be on Tuesday evening with free drinks and of course followed by the party.
To enhance the standing of our meeting we have invited more national and international speakers then before. You will find these prominent speakers not only in the plenary session but also in various sessions throughout the meeting. To make the meeting more interesting for young scientists, the Stichting Antonie van Leeuwenhoek will again pay both the admission fee as well as the hotel costs of presenting PhD students.
We hope to see you all in Papendal and look forward to an exciting and inspiring meeting and share new data and insight in Microbiology in all its aspects.

HET Instrument in 2010 eind september in de RAI Amsterdam
Grootste technologiebeurs Benelux terug naar het najaar
HET Instrument, de grote prestigieuze beurs voor technologie wordt in 2010 gehouden van 29 september tot en met 1 oktober in de RAI Amsterdam. Dankzij een samenwerkingsafspraak met de beurs De Industriële Week kunnen beide beurzen tegelijk in het tentoonstellingscomplex in de hoofdstad worden gehouden in een voor exposanten en bezoekers gunstige periode aan het begin van het najaar.
FHI, federatie van technologiebranches die de beurs HET Instrument organiseert voor haar leden, heeft sinds mei 2008 gezocht naar een mogelijkheid om het evenement voor Industriële Elektronica, Industriële Automatisering en Laboratorium Technologie weer in het najaar te kunnen laten plaatsvinden, het liefst zo vroeg mogelijk in die tijdsperiode. Het experiment in 2008 om de beurs in de maand mei te organiseren bleek zowel voor bezoekers als voor exposanten proefondervindelijk geen goede optie.
Mede dankzij de coöperatieve houding van zowel VNU Exhibitions, de organisator van De Industriële Week als de RAI Amsterdam wordt het mogelijk om HET Instrument nu in oktober te organiseren volgens het beproefde concept dat sinds 1956 door de brancheorganisaties is ontwikkeld. In de editie van 2010 zal onder de titel Life Sciences een nieuw beurselement worden toegevoegd aan HET Instrument.
De organisatie van het evenement blijft volledig in handen van de koepelorganisatie FHI, federatie van technologiebranches. Waar mogelijk en zinvol zal worden samengewerkt met behoud van onafhankelijkheid van HET Instrument. De periode en locatie van HET Instrument wordt nu voor drie edities vastgelegd, de jaren 2010, 2012 en 2014. Voor HET Instrument 2010 is gekozen voor het thema ‘the Sound of Technology’ als verbindend element over de verschillende branches. Voor de deelbeurzen wordt dit uitgewerkt in ‘the Sound of Electronics’, ‘the Sound of Automation’, ‘the Sound of Laboratory’ en ‘the Sound of Life Sciences’. Het Instrument omvat vijfhonderdtien exposerende bedrijven en trekt ongeveer 18.000 hoogopgeleide bezoekers. FHI, federatie van technologiebranches maakte een en ander bekend tijdens haar andere beurs Electronics & Automation die van 27 tot en met 29 mei wordt gehouden in de Jaarbeurs Utrecht. In de vier branches van FHI zijn in totaal achthonderdvijftig technologiebedrijven verenigd, waarvan er ongeveer 520 deelnemen aan HET Instrument. De totale omzet van de bij FHI aangesloten bedrijven omvat ruim zesenhalf miljard euro. Op HET Instrument 2010 worden circa achttienduizend professionele bezoekers verwacht waarvan ongeveer tachtig procent hbo of academisch is opgeleid. Daarmee is HET Instrument verreweg het grootste technologie-evenement in de Benelux.
